ABOUT THE BUILDER

Gene Berger lives in Hampton, VA and has been a lifelong ship model builder. A self-taught hobbyist, his skills evolved from building model kits to scratch-built projects. He has developed skills in a variety of technical modeling methods which have resulted in progressively more intricate models.

His associations with the Mariners’ Museum, IPMS and the Hampton Roads Ship Modelers Society (HRSMS) afford him the opportunity to grow as a builder and network with fellow modelers. In 2017-18, he helped to facilitate the HRSMS 50th Anniversary Exhibit at the Mariners’ Museum in Newport News, Virginia. At the IPMS Nationals in 2014 his USS Kendall C Campbell placed third and in 2016 his Sub Chaser SC-1075 took first place and Best Ship Award at the IPMS Nationals in Columbia, SC.

A retired airline pilot, but never idle, he has a sizable backlog of projects to complete.

Already a seasoned modeler at the age of thirteen, he saw the value of going BIG!
